Complete Guide to Applying for an MSEDCL EV Meter in Maharashtra (2026)

By SSR EVTECH ·

To get a dedicated EV meter in Maharashtra, you apply to your electricity distributor with your latest bill, ID, ownership proof and charger details, and request a load upgrade if your sanctioned load is too low. This guide covers the process, the documents, the tariff benefits and the mistakes that stall applications.

What is a dedicated EV meter (Green Meter)?

A dedicated EV meter, often called a Green Meter, is a separate connection that measures only your EV charging. It sits beside your regular household or business meter, so charging is billed on its own.

Many owners start by plugging a small charger into their existing connection. That can work for a 3.3 kW charger on a light load. It gets harder with a 7.4 kW or 11 kW charger, because your sanctioned load may not cover the charger plus everything else you run.

You are likely to need a dedicated meter if:

  • You are installing a 7.4 kW or higher home charger
  • Your sanctioned load is already close to your normal usage
  • You want EV charging tracked apart from household bills
  • You run a housing society, office, fleet or public charging site

Tariff benefits: shared home meter vs dedicated EV meter

Household electricity in Maharashtra is billed in slabs, so the rate per unit rises as your monthly consumption grows. EV charging on a shared meter adds units to that total and can push you into higher slabs. A separately metered EV connection is billed on its own, and the Maharashtra tariff schedule includes a dedicated EV charging category for such connections.

Whether you save depends on how much you charge and on any fixed or demand charges attached to the new connection. Tariffs are set by MERC and revised periodically, so check the current MSEDCL tariff schedule before you decide.

Which distributor do you apply to?

Your EV meter application goes to the distributor that supplies your premises. Across most of Maharashtra that is MSEDCL (Mahavitaran). Some city areas are supplied by Adani Electricity, Tata Power or BEST.

Each distributor has its own forms, charges and EV tariff. SSR EVTECH currently files EV meter applications for MSEDCL consumers. Support for Adani Electricity, Tata Power and BEST areas is coming in the next few months.

The quickest check is the distributor's name on your latest electricity bill. The steps below follow the MSEDCL process.

How to apply for an EV meter, step by step

Step 1: Check your sanctioned load and charger size

Find your sanctioned load on your electricity bill. Add the charger's rating to what your home or site already draws at peak. If the total exceeds your sanctioned load, you will need a load upgrade alongside the EV meter.

Step 2: Gather your documents

Prepare the set listed in the next section. Missing or mismatched documents are the most common cause of delay.

Step 3: Submit the application to MSEDCL

Apply for the EV connection, and for a load change if needed, through MSEDCL's online portal or your local office. State the charger rating and the load you are requesting.

Step 4: Answer queries and allow inspection

MSEDCL may raise questions or inspect the site. Replying quickly keeps the file moving.

Step 5: Pay the charges MSEDCL asks for

Once your request is accepted, MSEDCL issues the charges payable for the new connection or upgrade. Pay them to MSEDCL and keep the receipts.

Step 6: Meter installation and charger commissioning

MSEDCL installs the meter. Your electrician then connects the charger and tests it. Booking the charger installation in the same visit avoids another round of scheduling.

Documents you need and how long it takes

MSEDCL confirms the exact list for your case. Most residential applications need:

  • Your latest electricity bill with the consumer number
  • Photo ID and address proof
  • Proof of ownership or occupancy, or the owner's consent if you rent
  • A society or committee NOC if you live in an apartment
  • Charger make, model and rating
  • Site and load details for commercial installations

Timelines vary by area, load and how complete your file is. The pattern is consistent, though:

Your situationWhat to expect
Documents ready, no load changeThe shortest route
Load upgrade neededLonger, because a sanction and inspection step is added
Apartment or societyDepends on how quickly the NOC is issued
Commercial or CPO site, up to 250 kWThe longest, because larger loads need more checks

Why EV meter applications stall, and how to avoid it

Most delays come from the file, not the queue. Check these before you submit:

  • Names that differ between your ID, bill and ownership proof
  • A wrong or missing consumer number
  • A requested load that does not match the charger rating
  • No society NOC for an apartment installation
  • MSEDCL queries left unanswered
  • Applying to the wrong distributor

Frequently asked questions

Not always. It depends on your sanctioned load, your charger size and whether you want separate EV billing. A bill check settles it.

Yes, in many cases. Plan the charger and load first so installation is ready when the car arrives.

Yes. Apartments usually need a society NOC, and shared parking means the load is planned for several chargers.

Your next step

Start with two things: your sanctioned load and the distributor named on your bill. Those decide whether you need a load upgrade, which application route applies and how long the process is likely to take. If you are also choosing a charger, compare the options on our EV chargers page, or send your bill to SSR EVTECH and we will recommend the charger, the meter plan and the installation in one quote.
